Deusdedit Kakoko, the ejected Director-General of Tanzania Ports Authority (TPA), has been apprehended a day after he was suspended over fraud allegations.

Media reports indicate Kakoko was taken into custody for grilling on Monday night following a raid at his home by detectives from the Prevention and Combating of Corruption Bureau (PCCB).

During the operation, the officials seized $1.5 billion (Ksh164 million) at his home. The money was stuck in a small bag.

The raid comes amid reports that billions of shillings were recently withdrawn from the Central Bank of Tanzania on orders from the fired TPA boss after the death of President John Pombe Magufuli.

The money is said to have been transferred to a personal account at National Microfinance Bank (NMB).

The money which included $11,799,357.91 and TSh6.3 billion, was transferred to NMB four days after the death of Magufuli which according to authorities occurred on March 17.
