The Nairobi County Government is considering introducing new laws that will place tough penalties on hawkers who walk the streets and engage law enforcement in running battles.

Nairobi City County Popup Markets and Street Vendors Bill sponsored by Nominated MCA Kabiro Mbugua, seeks to streamline the way hawkers operate their businesses in the city.

The bill has already passed through public participation and second reading and is pending the final vote of the MCAs.

The Nominated MCA wants the establishment of the Department of Pop Up markets to handle revenue collection, licensing, maintenance of markets and law enforcement for street vendors and hawkers.

The bill mandates that markets will be established in different streets, and hawkers will be allowed to operate in the designated area at least twice a week.

A fine not exceeding Ksh 50,000 or a six-month jail term was proposed for traders who break laws related to licencing and selling prohibited goods.
