Papa Dennis, an award-winning gospel artist was found dead last Saturday after he reportedly fell from a building in Ngara. The artist had his rough times and probably chose a way out of his hard times out of life. Most artists came forward to talk about all Papa Dennis had been going through and its clear that he did not really have a good time.
His burial was attended by hundreds of Kenyans and many celebrities too. A host of celebrities turned up to eulogize fallen gospel star Papa Dennis during memorial service held at Nairobi Chapel on Monday. Starehe MP Charles Kanyi aka Jagua, Grandpa Records CEO Refigah, Gloria Muliro, DJ Euphoric, DK Kwenye Beat, DJ Mo, Ringtone, Mr Seed and actress Martha Wanjero (Papa Dennis’ girlfriend) were among those in attendance.
Papa Dennis’ twin brother, Simon Mwangi paid tribute to the late artiste during his memorial service being held at Nairobi Chapel. Simon sang ‘Nashukuru’ a song the late Papa Dennis sang in 2018. The song is a thanksgiving track to God for bringing him from the streets to where he was at the time. Part of the lyrics from the songs reads, ‘Kama sio wewe ningekua wapi mimi, nashukuru. Nina sababu ya kuimba nashukuru. Among those who attended the memorial service was Vivianne, known for hits such as Chum chum and Feel Me.
Speaking to a news team she said, ‘PAPA DENNIS AND I USED TO BE IN THE MAIN STUDIO, MAIN SWITCH AND THAT IS WHERE WE CONNECTED. HE WAS A SOFT SPOKEN PERSON, HE WAS THE KIND OF ARTISTE THAT YOU WOULD FIND IN THE STUDIO AND YOU WOULDN’T KNOW HE WAS A CELEB. HAKUA NA KIHEREHERE. WE JUST WANT TO PAY OUR LAST RESPECTS.’ she later added that she wanted to talk to Simon Mwangi and give him her condolences and probably offer him some cash to push him through the hard time that he is in.
But in the whole mass, no one would had expected to hear what the MP Kanyi had to say about artists and their life. Noting that there is money in music, Jaguar observed that when locals acts start earning money, they instantly want to live in upmarket estates and drive big cars. “Hakuna kazi ikona pesa kuliko hii ya wasanii. Hii muziki hii, ni wewe ujipange vizuri kwa sababu sisi ndio tunfanyanga makosa…Wewe unastruggle unakua msanii then after ushapata hit song unahamia Kileleshwa, kitu ya pili unanunua Range Rover na kitu ya tatu unataka mabibi watatu,” said Jaguar. “Mimi nilisema kwa ile mstari ya watu wanataka kwenda kuona Rais ni tuongee juu ya policies kwa sababu hakuna mtu anaeza kupangia maisha yako.
“Kama mimi niongee hapa niseme ukweli. Mimi kuna wakati nilikua msanii number one, kwa sababau tunaanzanga na E na wale wako E ndio husumbua sana, ukifika A, one concert mtu unalipwa 1 Million. Wewe niambie, mama wa sukumu yule ako pale Muthurwa apate 1 million ni mgani ushaiona amehamia pale Kileleshwa?” posed the ‘Kigeugeu’ hitmaker.
It might be a long journey for Papa Dennis but we all know he still had a lot to give back to us. May he rest in peace
