On Monday night, November 23, three people were shot dead after police officers raided their estate in Nairobi and opened fire.
The three, who were suspected gang members, were allegedly behind a series of robberies in Mathare Estate.
Nairobi County Police boss Rashid Yakub reported that the three had been terrorizing the residents after stealing a gun from a police officer.
Witnesses stated that they were woken up in the middle of the night by gunshots as the police engaged the suspects.
Maurice Otieno, one of the residents, stated that the push and pull between the gang members and the officers lasted for an hour.
“It was hard for us to even sleep as the police engaged the gangsters. We were shocked to learn that the three were robbers,” stated the witness.
