Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) shot dead two armed criminals as they prepared to stage a robbery in Ukunda, Kwale County, on Friday.
The detectives were on patrol when they came across the duo, who were armed with knives, machetes and a firearm that they suspected was a fake.
Ballistic experts are currently examining the firearm to determine whether it is capable of firing.
The two criminals were gunned down after allegedly refusing to surrender to the officers.
They are believed to be members of a criminal gang responsible for a recent spate of robberies in Diani township and its environs.
The detectives also recovered a number of cell phone handsets that were believed to have been stolen from crime victims.
Scenes of crime personnel have since documented the scene while bodies of the deceased were moved to Kwale sub-county hospital mortuary awaiting identification.
