Kenya National Teachers’ Union (KNUT) has started the process of shutting down 110 offices across the country due to financial difficulties.

Wilson Sossion, KNUT Secretary General , on Wednesday, 11 November, accused the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) of failing to pay union fees.

Sossion shared his concerns in a letter addressed to the Secretary of the Ministry of Labor and Social Security, Simon Chelagui, asking him to take action on the matter.

Sossion reported that the union had been significantly cut down as it had reduced its membership from 187,471 to 34,312 in June 2019.

He also pointed out that the union had obtained a paltry Ksh25 million in cash from the government in October out of the Ksh80 million it was expected to earn.

“The annual budget for the ADC is approximately Ksh200 million, which the union saves over time. What can we do with Ksh25 million? It cannot even meet our payroll budget,” stated Sossion.
