Kenya is a multi ethnic state located in the great lakes of East Africans main cohabitants are the Bantus and Nilotes with some cushitic speaking minority.
Kenya has a very diverse population that includes most major ethnic, racial and linguistic groups found in Africa.
Focusing on the Luhyas also known as the Abaluhya are from the Bantus ethnic groups being the second largest tribe in kenya.
The Luhyas consist of so many tribes mainly, Bukusu, Khayo Marachi Marama, Nyala, Nyole, Samia, Tiriki, Idhaho,wanga and the Batura who are closely related to the Masaba or Gisu whose language is mutually intelligible with the Luhyas.
The Bukusu and the Maragoli are the two largest Luhya tribes.
Politically the disunity and selfishness depicted by the Luhya leaders can’t help them acsend in major political power.
They also pride themselves of deep culture and intriguing belief’s although converted to mainstream religions of Muslim and Christianity, they are still very deliberate in their culture. This can be seen during major celebrations such as weddings, burials and circumcisions.
The demography of kenya is monitored by the Kenyan National Bureau of Statistics and the 2019 census report place the Luhya community as the second largest tribe in kenya.
During political alignments as history records the Luhyas have never voted as a block cause of there ethnic divide that sometimes brings them to identify themselves through there sub-tribes.
I have noticed through social media and interaction through networks and friends, that the Luhya unity is at stumbling blocks due to their selfishness and incapability to reason as one.
Not being out of content but this can also been portrayed through Luyha leaders in the political arena and not forgetting F.C Leopard a football club ingrained to their dialect.
The club has been on poor performance for the last four years dimming Kenya football league a no competition zone for Gormahia, this is just but a concern since the football arena has no worthy competition as before.
with the BBI initiative i surely hope that the Luhya community will take this as pointer and interact jointly without ethnicity among the tribe.
