The US social media giant has decided to close over ten thousands accounts on their platform as of today morning for what they claimed to be that the accounts are being used by China, Turkey and Russia to push for their own political propaganda, sow misinformation and attack critics.

The Australian Strategic Policy Institute (ASPI) — a think-tank — analysed the data set ahead of the announcement and said the network was primarily looking to sway views within the global Chinese diaspora.

China had the biggest account closure after it was found with about 150,000 amplifier accounts that came from 23,750 accounts. The Turkish network had 7,340 accounts while the Russian group was 1,152 strong.

Twitter ended up removing all the content in the accounts and later stated that they have put all of them in database for the purpose of research.

Fergus Hanson, director of ASPI’s cyber centre regarding the story wrote, “They were tweeting predominantly in Chinese languages and spreading geopolitical narratives favorable to the Communist Party of China, while continuing to push deceptive narratives about the political dynamics in Hong Kong,”
