University of Nairobi students on Monday evening went on the rampage to protest the death of a fellow student.
The student succumbed to his injuries after he was allegedly beaten by guards guarding the hostels last Wednesday. The irate students set one of the abandoned hostels on fire during the Monday evening protests.
Samuel Ayoma, a student leader, told Nation that the student was allegedly clobbered by guards who later abandoned him at Central Park, few meters from the main campus.
“The guards claim that the student was a goon, yet we know him as a fellow comrade,” noted Mr. Ayoma.
The incident comes barely weeks after the University was put on the spot over a memo that appeared to heap blame on a rape victim.
A controversial memo sent out to students and authored by the acting director of security appeared to say a student who had been raped by three assailants ‘put herself’ in the position.
According to the memo, the female student had gone on a night out ‘entertained herself at various joints’ before walking back to the university “drunk” and “alone”.
Most students were seen leaving school as on social media parents were lamenting on how the girl child is highly endangered.
