A university of Nairobi Lecturer has been sentenced to three years in jail or pay sh 150,000 fine for receiving bribe sh 3000 from a student.

The lecturer identified as Vincent Mbindo Kathumo in the department of Land Resource Management Agriculture Technology asked Duncan Kibet who is a student sh 3,000 over an examination irregularity.

A student based at the upper Kabete campus told the court, Kibet  was sitting for an exam in Land forms December 21, 2016 when the incident occurred.

It’s said the lecturer spotted a phone in Kibet’s pocket and immediately confiscated it and his exam paper.

He and the 20 others were kicked out of the exam room and told to prepare to re-sit the exam the following year.

“He confiscated my phone and the exam paper and asked me to leave the room. I was joined by around 20 students who had also been found with phones. After the exam, he took our numbers, returned our phones and told us to prepare to re-sit the exam in January 2017,” said Kibet.

The following year January Kibet received a call from the lecturer who quested to meet him the next day at his office. In the middle of the meeting he asked sh 2000 for forgiveness and sh 3000 to help him re-sit his exam.

He later informed his father about the sh 5000 for the lecturer in which they reported the matter to the DP Vice chancellor who advised them to report to the police.

However in his defense, the lecturer said he donated the money to the needy people.
