Almost 60 families have been left homeless after fire burned down several houses in Kiamaina slums, Laikipia County.

The tragedy, which occurred on Tuesday night, November 17, saw a fire break out and spread quickly due to congestion in the slums.

County fire rescue teams had a hard time controlling the fire, as residents and observers were ineffective in their attempts to provide help.

Area residents who have survived the tragedy have appealed to the county government and well-wishers to assist in their attempts to get them back on their feet due to the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic that has also impacted their livelihoods.

“Many of our people live from hand to mouth and now, because of the fire tragedy, they have no source of income,” a woman stated.

We want the government to purchase more fire fighting equipment in order to prevent such occurrences,” a local resident added.
