World football stars and African giants Didier Drogba, Samuel Eto’o among others; have unapologetically condemned two French doctors; Jean Paul Mira and Camille Locht for proposing the new COVID-19 vaccine under development, be tested on Africans.
“It is totally inconceivable we keep on cautioning this. Africa isn’t a testing lab. I would like to vividly denounce those demeaning, false and most of all deeply racists words. Helps us save Africa with the current ongoing Covid 19 and flatten the curve.” Read a tweet from Drogba.
One of the Doctors, Jean Paul Mira even went ahead to compare Africans to prostitutes who were mostly used for the study of HIV/AIDS. He said they tried things on the so called ‘prostitutes’ because they were highly exposed and never had any protection.
In a talk show aired on one French TV channel, Dr Mira said, “If I can be provocative, shouldn’t we do this study in Africa where there are no masks, no treatment, no intensive care? A bit like we did in some studies with AIDS?”
His colleague Camille Locht responded by saying, “You are right, we are actually thinking of a parallel study in Africa to use with the same kind of approach we had with BCG placebos,” referring to a vaccination done against tuberculosis which the medical research lab Inserm says has appeared to protect children against respiratory infections.
Netizens especially of African decent did not take this lying down. They condemned the doctors and asked them to channel their resources in worst hit areas such Italy, France and other western countries.
“We call upon all blacks across the world to denounce these two doctors who want to spread COVID-19 across Africa like they did with HIV/AIDS,” reads a tweet response to Drogba’s tweet.
France alone as a country has a higher number of people infected with COVID-19 compared to Africa as a continent.
“Welcome to the West, where white people beleive themselves to be so superior that racism and debility become commonplace,” Wrote Ba from Senegal. “Time to rise.”
