Kenya Airways is planning to lay off 590 employees in its second phase of the exercise as indicated by the Group Managing Director Allan Kilavuka.

This comes barely weeks after at least 700 staff members in phase one were sacked. It is said the entire restructuring plan targets at least 1,500 employees including Pilots, Cabin crew, technical department among others.

Reports reaching us indicate 182 pilots and more than 400 cabin crew are fronting job losses. This has raised concerns on what’s the future plan of our national airline.

Recently Kenya Airway employees stormed outside the parliament to oppose their sacking from the company.

“The next phase of the staff rationalization actions will see some staff in the various departments across the organisation declared redundant. This phase is expected to impact about 590 members of staff,” part of the letter read.

Director Kilavuka also said they will reduce its assets including fleet size.

“We are doing this because we will not be able to afford to run the current size of operations based on the anticipated revenue. This is why it is also necessary to rationalize staff size,” said Kilavuka.
