Chief Justice David Maraga has confirmed that he will proceed on a permanent leave on Friday, 11 December, awaiting his retirement and consequent handover to his successor.

Maraga spoke in his hometown of Nyamira, where the Manga Law Courts were reinstated. He stated that his tenure was challenging and asked Kenyans to pray for his successor, who according to him will face several obstacles in the office.

The CJ lamented that he was leaving office at a time when the judiciary was facing major problems, mainly due to the executive he described as determined to weaken the institution by withholding its funds to run its operations.

“I am retiring a happy man and Friday will be my last day in office. But what I want you to do is to start praying for whoever will be appointed CJ after me, because this work is a difficult one. In fact, you should start praying for my successor even now,” he stated.
