Interior CS Fred Matiang’i has announced that Saturday, October 10, will be a public holiday called Huduma Day.

On Thursday, 19 December 2019, President Uhuru Kenyatta honored former head of state Mzee Moi’s special request.

In a cabinet meeting led by him, the President approved the renaming of Moi Day, which will take place on October 10, as Huduma Day.

In a statement on Thursday, 8 October, Matiang’i announced that the day will be observed through national prayers that will highlight service and volunteerism to the society.

“Kenyans are encouraged to participate in the prayers and promote national unity, social justice, cohesion and sustainable development in their communities for the benefit of present and future generations,” Matiang’i stated.

On Wednesday, October 7, President Uhuru Kenyatta dedicated Friday, October 9 to October 11, 2020, a national weekend of prayer, during which Kenyans are encouraged to pray for the country.

The change was in accordance with the wish of former President Daniel Arap Moi to celebrate the day as a day of service and volunteerism.
