Residents of Malaba held demonstrations after a 27-year-old man, Ezekiel Odera was killed by a police officer for not wearing a mask.

The deceased’s brother claimed that Ezekiel Odera was rushed to the hospital, but died while being attended to.

On Saturday, November 28th, the Malaba residents demonstrated. They lit bonfires and took off their masks in protest, creating a big traffic chaos in the border area.

Teso North MP Edward Oku Kaunya criticized the violence of the police and called on Police Inspector General Hillary Mutyambai to bring the suspect to justice.

“I condemn with the strongest terms the incident that took place. It is unfortunate that police officers can use firearms because a young man has not put on a mask. Action should be taken by the IG. The officer must be arrested and arraigned in court,” Edward stated.

“The public is demonstrating peacefully and the GSU should not be deployed to harm them. They are expressing their rightful anger,” he added.
