A family in Tharaka Nithi has put up an iconic tree for sale in an attempt to raise Ksh500,000 medical funds for their kin who is in hospital.

The Mutunguruni tree is believed to be among the tallest trees in Kenya and according to locals, the tree is 200 years old.

The family said they have been taking care of the tree for several years, but after consultations, they decided to sell it to get money for hospital bills.

A family representative stated that they had already spoken to the Chief and also sought permission from the Kenya Forest Service (KFS) to proceed with the plan.

The tree is a tourist attraction in the region and has served as a shrine where community elders go for divine intervention in times of drought or other calamities.

The family managed to make a business idea out of the tree, charging between Ksh50 and Ksh100 for those who were interested to see the tree close up and Ksh500 for large groups.
