Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiang'i.

The government has declared Friday, May 14, 2021 a public holiday to allow Kenyans of Muslim faith to celebrate Idd-ul-Fitr, which marks the end of the Holy month of Ramadan.

Interior CS Fred Matiang’i in a gazette notice dated May 5th, announced this in exercise of the powers conferred by section 2 (1) of the Public Holidays Act.

“It is notified for the general information of the public that the Cabinet Secretary for Interior and Co-ordination of National Government, in exercise of the powers conferred by section 2(1) of the Public Holidays Act, declares that Friday, the 14th May, 2021, shall be a public holiday to mark Idd-ul-Fitr,” reads the notice.

Muslims celebrate Idd-ul-Fitr with prayers called “Salat Al Eid” in Arabic. They gather in mosques or open spaces and offer two units of prayer called “Rakat”.

The prayers are followed by a sermon, in which the imam asks for forgiveness, mercy, and peace for every being across the world.

However, this year Muslims will have to cope with the complications caused by Covid-19, which has resulted in the government banning large gatherings.
