On Thursday, 3 December, the High Court ordered the State to refund the money that was collected from people forced into the Covid 19 Quarantine Centers.

The court ruled that it was illegal to keep Kenyans in quarantine centers without a court order.

On Tuesday, March 22, Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe declared a mandatory 14-day quarantine for all incoming travelers and all who may have been in contact with them.

The government had previously noted that travelers at the airport could choose between paying to stay in a hotel or staying in a government quarantine facility without charge.

Mandatory quarantine was clouded by chaos as people in quarantine complained of poor conditions, including lack of bedding, water, food and cleaning supplies such as soaps and detergents.

The government is yet to disclose how much it collected from quarantine facilities across the country, with some reports suggesting that they parted with roughly Ksh28,000 for 14 days of quarantine.
