Higher electricity bills are awaiting Kenyans after it appeared that the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) was planning to approve Kenya Power’s proposal to raise electricity prices by up to 20%.

This comes more than a year after Kenya Power submitted its application to the Energy Regulator.

Kenya’s main power supplier wants to increase the consumption charge for usage of less than 100 kilowatts per month to Ksh12.50 per unit, up from the existing Ksh10.

The cost of consuming more than 100 units will increase to Ksh19.53 per unit from the current Ksh15.80 in the event that the regulatory authority approves the proposed tariffs. According to the report, the new tariffs will be revealed in the coming weeks.

Kenya Power disclosed that higher tariffs are justified on the grounds that the existing electricity prices lapsed last year.
