The Kenya Defense Forces (KDF) is seeking approval to establish its own independent university.

Speaking before Members of Parliament at the beginning of November 2020, Defense CS Monica Juma requested the legislators to amend the Education Act to allow the Ministry to proceed with the plan.

Juma said the move would reduce the expense for KDF who spend a lot of money certifying specialized officers in public universities.

The National Defense University of Kenya will teach and certify officers from the National Intelligence Service (NIS), KDF and security team from other African countries.

KDF officers are trained under National Defense College of Kenya. The training facility provides training courses to senior commanders in the Army, Navy, Air Force and Special Forces.

Senior Kenyan civil servants and senior military officers also receive training from African countries and other continents.

The new university will comprise of affiliate colleges from KDF and NIS if approved.
