Kisumu investors, developers, landlords and tenants have raised concerns after the County Government launched a second round of demolition.

Governor Anyang Nyongo’s administration has marked buildings in Manyatta Arab estate, alleging that the investors grabbed public land.

He added that some of the buildings were constructed on sewer lines which needed repairs and maintenance.

Traders are at risk of losing millions of shillings, as roadside stalls have also been marked for destruction. Supermarkets, a three-storey flat and several residential houses in the estate are also at risk of being demolished.

Tenants expressed concerns that they did not receive eviction notices and have not planned on how to relocate.

Abala Wanga, Kisumu County Director, said the demolition was part of the government’s plan to construct a non-motorized transport system which includes pedestrian and bicycle lanes.
