On Friday, December 18, the National Treasury issued Ksh.93 million to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) for verification of Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) signatures.

The Commission had asked for Ksh.241 million, stating that they would not proceed until the Treasury released the funds.

IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati stated that the budget of Ksh.241 million was to be used to hire and train clerks who will verify the signatures.

The signatures will be verified according to counties, constituencies, wards, down to the polling station level.

The arrangement was intended to help easily identify the registered voters in the region by matching each signature with their identification cards.

When the verification process is completed by the IEBC, the draft bill will be taken to the 47 counties for Members of County Assemblies to review it.

After passing it through the National Parliament and the Senate, a date will be set for a referendum.
