Police were forced to use teargas on Tuesday, December 1 to disperse residents who had stormed an overturned lorry to loot beer. The lorry overturned along the Embu-Mwea road.

Despite lobbing tear gas, the residents continued their looting as the police took time to bring the situation under control.

The accident and the looting incident caused traffic snarl-up along the busy highway. The lorry covered both sides of the road, making it impassible.

One of the locals, who was around the scene of the incident, initially assumed that the truck was ferrying milk and was surprised to find that it had crates of beer.

“I was on the farm when I heard a loud bang and ran to check what had happened. On reaching the scene I saw a group of youth looting from the lorry. I thought it was milk and asked for a packet before finding out that it was beer which I don’t take,” the eyewitness explained .

Residents are now asking the government to step in and put proper signage and mark the road as the festive period nears. They also wanted bumps to be erected on the road to reduce the speed of the vehicles in a bid to curb the rise in accidents.
