President Uhuru Kenyatta flew to the Vatican City on Friday 6 November for a special meeting with Pope Francis.

The Head of State was invited by Pope Francis to the Vatican City State, making history as the first Kenyan Head of State to visit the smallest country in the world.

President Kenyatta was granted a full Apostolic Palace State reception including a guard of honor set up by the Swiss Guards which is an army of 135 highly trained marksmen from Switzerland, and mandated with the duty of protecting the Pope and guarding the Apostolic Palace.

The soldiers are all committed Roman Catholics who make up the smallest army in the world.

After the formal State reception ceremony, President Kenyatta went to a private audience with Pope Francis before leading the Kenyan team, which included Foreign Affairs Secretary Raychelle Omamo, for joint talk headed by Cardinal Pietro Paroli.

The two discussed a number of issues of mutual interest between Kenya and the Holy See, including education, health, regional peace and security, as well as the fight against Covid-19.
