At least three miners have been buried alive after a quarry collapsed at Chepkositonik village in Bomet East Constituency, Bomet County. Village residents rushed to the site to help with the rescue mission.
The quarry walls are said to have collapsed on Tuesday, December 29 at around 10:00 a.m.
A resident in the area stated that the miners buried in the quarry had gone in first, and those who were yet to enter the quarry witnessed the whole incident.
“We are not sure the number of those trapped inside but we are told they could be more than three people because they always wake up as early as 6:00 am to start work. We are currently using our hands and spades to dig up the rubble but we are hoping that a machine that can do it faster will be deployed,” he stated.
Stanley Mutai, Bomet County Disaster Management Officer, disclosed that a team has been deployed to the site to assist the rescue mission.
