Nearly 360 families living in Starehe Estate in Nairobi are facing eviction to pave way for the government’s affordable housing project.

Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC) employees begun disconnecting power lines from housing units on Monday, December 28, 2020.

The demolition of the houses is expected to start today, December 29, with reports indicating that the government is set to start the project in January 2021.

Residents of the houses claimed that the eviction is in bad faith, stating that their representatives had held talks with the office of the ombudsman, the ministry of housing and agreed to delay the demolitions.

Adam Katana, Starehe Residents Association Chairman stated that they had an agreement with the relevant authorities to give an allowance for schooling children to complete their terms.

He further argued that most of the residents were casual civil servants, and their earnings would be crippled by the high rents they would encounter outside the estate.
