The Colombian Salt Cathedral Built m Underground

The Colombian Salt Cathedral has been proclaimed as a big wonder in Colombia and its not for any wrong reason. The Cathedral is 200m underground and all its structures have been purely made of salt with great artistic sculptures that adorn its walls.

The Cathedral came into being after miners were done extracting salt from the area leaving behind a vast networks of pits and grottoes. The Catholic church officials and Zipaquirá’s miners persuaded the Colombian government to convert the empty spaces into a church in 1953.

There was a closure of the church later in 1990 due to some structural problems. 127 miners and sculptors where deployed in the site and they renovated the structure into the current Roman Cathedral Church. The Cathedral can now hold a capacity of 10,000 people at once.
