Africa’s largest supermarket, Shoprite has sacked over 100 workers and shutdown its second branch in Nyali Mombasa amid the COVID-19 crisis that has hit hard the economy.

The organisation is said to have already informed the affected parties of its decision to close the city Mall.

In a notice to Kenya Union of Commercial Food and Allied workers (KUCFW), the chain store stated it was no longer viable to continue trading at the Nyali branch.

“Endeavor to continue trading at the Nyali branch is no longer viable. Financial and other data will be provided and discussed at a proposed meeting. It is contemplated that the intended date of termination on account of redundancy will be August 31, 2020. There are currently 115 persons employed at the branch of which 92 are members of KUCFW,” it read.

Early this year April, Shoprite supermarket laid off 104 employees after closing down its Karen branch.
