Siaya County has become the first county to approve the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) giving the initiative a step towards victory.

The County Assembly passed the Constitution of Kenya (Amendment) Bill on Wednesday, February 3, paving the way for BBI referendum.

George Okode, Siaya County Assembly Speaker, confirmed the outcome stating that he was getting ready to forward the results to the National Assembly.

The referendum is expected to be carried out anytime beginning April 2021.

This comes a day after former Prime Minister Raila Odinga told MCAs from the region that the BBI bill will help in uplifting the standards of living of Kenyans, particularly the youth.

The document, supported by both President Uhuru Kenyatta and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, has attracted opposition with those opposing it criticizing Uhuru’s recent move to grant car loans to MCAs as a bribe to win their support.

Uhuru promised to help Members of the County Assembly achieve their demands of a Ksh.2 million car grant each during a meeting with MCAs from Mt Kenya on Friday, January 30.

The legislators in turn promised to support the Building Bridges Initiative.
