On Tuesday, 8 December, Kenyan doctors issued fresh demands following the news of the deaths of their colleagues.

The Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists’ Union (KMPDU) in a press conference, called on the Ministry of Health (MoH) to settle unpaid bills and reimburse the families of deceased doctors.

“We demand MoH to take full responsibility for outstanding bills and compensation of families,” Dr. Chibanzi Mwachonda, acting Secretary-General for the KMPDU stated.

Mwachonda mentioned that health workers were vulnerable to infection at their workplaces and were getting sick and dying from the deadly virus.

Dr. Mwachonda also warned that the scheduled medics’ strike would resume on 21 December if safety, health insurance and staffing problems were not addressed.

KMPDU President Dr. Samuel Oroko also criticized politicians for making insensitive comments against health workers.

“When this is happening some governors go to media to say health care workers should relax it is time for BBI. It is extremely unfair,” he stated.
