Three police officers sustained serious injuries after they were stabbed by a man they had gone to arrest.
According to a report published on Sunday, June 6, one of the officers was taken to the hospital in critical condition, while the suspect, Ismail Mwandembo, was shot dead during the confrontation.
The suspect, who was from Mwatate in Taita Taveta County, had reportedly been on the run for some time as police hunted for him over rape claims.
Voi sub-county police commander Bernastein Shari confirmed that the officers went to arrest the man after receiving a tip from his family members.
He reportedly assaulted some of his family members while evading police arrest.
“When he saw the police he tried to shield himself with his mother. The suspect was carrying a machete and a knife and threatened to kill her if the police insisted on arresting him.
“Officers tried to warn him by shooting in the air but he defied to surrender. He then attacked an officer by cutting him on the forehead and that forced the police to shoot him dead,” Shari stated.
The officers were taken to Moi County Referral Hospital in Voi.
