The government has shifted civil marriages from Sheria House to Nairobi Primary School Grounds.

Speaking on Wednesday, 16 September, CAS State Law Winnie Chuchu mentioned that the move by the Registrar of Marriages is aimed at reducing traffic at the Harambee Avenue office along Harambee Avenue in accordance with the Covid-19 containment measure.

In the next three months, the ceremonies will be performed in the school grounds following the national government’s gazette.

“The cost of setting up here was very minimal as we got these grounds for free. We are planning to hold 20 weddings per day to ease the backlog with those allowed being the bride, groom, and two witnesses.”

The grounds are equipped with hand washing stations, changing rooms, four signposts and two photographic areas.

“Time allocated for each couple is 30 minutes; 10 minutes officiating, 10 minutes for photos and 10 minutes to leave the venue and it costs Ksh3,900 for the whole process,” CAS Chuchu stated.

With the registration process completely online, couples are expected to register their information on the platform, pay the marriage fee, book a pre-wedding interview, and then make an appointment for the wedding to be conducted by the Registrar.

However, couples are not permitted to choose their wedding date and, in the event that they miss their appointment, they will have to book new dates.
