An artist in Nigeria’s northern state of Kano has been sentenced to death by hanging for blaspheming against Prophet Muhammad.
An upper Sharia court in Hausawa claimed Yahaya Sharif Aminu who is 22 years was guilty of committing blasphemy for a song that circulated early this year March.
However the 22-year-old Yahaya did not deny the charges. Judge Khadi Kani said Sharif-Aminu could appeal against the verdict.
Critics claim the song praised an imam from the Tijaniya Muslim brotherhood to the extent it exalted him above Prophet Muhammad
The musician is said to have gone into hiding after composing the song. Protesters had razed his family home and even went ahead to the police station to demand action be taken against him.
