Police officers in Meru are hunting five inmates that dug their way out of the police cells and escaped in Timau police station.

The suspects had been arraigned and later taken into custody at the station awaiting transfer to Meru GK Prison.

Their prison break was discovered by police on duty after the remaining two inmates started banging the door signaling the officers in charge.

Constable Symour Letta and Nelson Mwita who responded found the five already gone after managing to cut through a kei-apple fence.

A screw driver and heavy-duty wire are believed to have been used to drill the hole were found at the scene. The remaining two said stronger metals were used to cut.

The suspects who escaped were identified as Denis Kaimenyi, Silas Kinyua, Daniel Murithi, Alvin Murithi and Nicholas Kimathi (robbery with violence, vehicle theft, livestock theft, defilement, committing unnatural offence) were the charges of each respectively.

This comes after another prison break was reported in Bungoma with 11 suspects escaping.
