On Friday, September 18, three suspects related to the 2013 Westgate terror attack complained that they were not satisfied with some of the facilities at Kamiti Maximum Prison.

One of the defendants, Hussein Mustafa, told the court that his health was affected by beans and kales that were being served at the jail.

The second offender, Liban Abdullahi, complained that there was no sugar in the porridge offered.

“Kwa sasa nakunywa uji, mkate na maziwa kidogo, niko na shida na maharagwe na sukuma wiki (I have been taking porridge, bread and some milk at the moment. I have an issue with kales and beans,” he said.

Mohammed Ahmed Abdi, another suspect, told the court that the cells were too cold, adding that he wanted an additional blanket.

State prosecutor Edwin Okello, for his part, announced that sugar and warm water were resources available at the Kamiti Maximum Jail, suggesting that officers should justify why they were not available.

The magistrate ordered Kamiti prison to file a report on the suspect’s complaints within 10 days, in response to the allegations. On October 5, 2020, the court is expected to give its final decision on the issue.
