The national government has in the recent past stepped up its effort towards ensuring that menstruation doesn’t not hinder access to education by girls from needy backgrounds.
And in the 2017-2018 financial calendar, the government made an increment in the Ministry of Education’s budget to facilitate sufficient provision of sanitary towels to school girls, only for impounded sanitary towels that are meant to be supplied to the needy while in a usable good state to be found and identified to be expired towels that are repackaged.
It’s a shame that someone is making money out of free goods that are distributed by the government! It is quite sad that they are even expired towels, no wonder we have so many cases of urinary tract infections around.
Juja OCPD Dorothy Megarusha confirmed that the impounded sanitary towels are believed to have been stolen from several counties, including Murang’a, Mombasa, Kilifi and Kiambu, since 2018. They were being repackaged in order to resell them, she said.
