A senior lecturer at the University of Nairobi was charged at the Kibera Law Courts on Wednesday, November 17, for a violent assault on his girlfriend.

The State Prosecutor told the court that the couple, James Kahunyo and Mariam Wanjiku,  fought after a disagreement over control of the window of the lecturer’s car.

According to police sources, the two were returning to their apartment from a restaurant on Waiyaki way on Friday, October 2, when the incident occurred.

Wanjiku is said to have asked Kahunyo to close the window, but the 66-year-old lecturer insisted that it remained open and the quarrel arose. This forced Wanjiku to leave the apartment to which Kahunyo took offence.

Sources claim that Kahunyo kicked his lover in the ribs, pulled her into the bedroom, and reportedly assaulted her.

Kibera Chief Magistrate Joyce Gandani assessed the facts before the court and released the lecturer on a Ksh.300,000 bond or alternative cash bail of Ksh.50,000.
