In the US, impeachment is a formal charge of serious wrongdoing against the holder of public office. It is one of the few ways a sitting President can be kicked out of the White House before an election. The US Constitution states a President “shall be removed from office on impeachment for. And conviction of, treason, bribery, or other high crimes and misbehaviors“.
The “sole power of impeachment” is held by the House of Representatives, the lower chamber of Congress. A simple majority is required – i.e. more than half of the Congressmen must vote to impeach the President. Then the case would be tried by the Senate, the upper chamber of Congress, where a two-thirds majority is needed.
Donald Trump is the first president since the 1990s to face impeachment by Congress. At best for him, it is the dirtiest, most humiliating battle yet of an unrestrained political career. At worst, it will be the death blow to his presidency. Donald Trump was impeached in a mostly party-line vote in the House of Representatives on Wednesday evening.
Democrats accuse Trump of pursuing a scheme to cheat in the 2020 election by pressuring Ukraine to manufacture bad news about the former vice-president Joe Biden, one of Trump’s main Democrat rivals, and then blocking congressional oversight.
Mr. Trump denies wrongdoing and calls the impeachment inquiry a “witch hunt”.
“The resolution put forward by Speaker Pelosi confirms that House Democrats’ impeachment has been an illegitimate sham from the start. As it lacked any proper authorization by a House vote,” said White House spokeswoman Stephanie Grisham.
House Republican leader Kevin McCarthy, speaking before the resolution was unveiled, said the entire process was a “sham.”
As president Triumph’s presidency has progressed, the victories have become fewer and farther between while the din of disapproval has grown louder. Still, for Trump, the threat of impeachment represents a new frontier in hate Dom and it seems likely to deepen his sense of personal grievance. If history is any guide, Americans can expect even more volatile behavior from a president already prone to volatility.
