On Monday, December 21, Nairobi Speaker Benson Mutura was sworn in as acting Governor, for the next 60 days following Mike Mbuvi Sonko’s impeachment last week.

Benson took the oath of office at the Kenyatta International Convention Center (KICC) at about 10 a.m.

During the function which took place under a strong security presence, Mutura told the public that he was ready to contribute to his work in the service of the people of Nairobi.

“You have elected me to various positions in the city and I have never failed you. This will not be the first time,” the acting Governor said.

The Nairobi Governor’s by-election will take place early next year, around 15 February 2021, and will take place within 60 days of the vote of the Senate indictment.

Mutura was initially planned to be sworn in on Friday, but the event had to be postponed following the late arrival of the magistrate who was to preside over the ceremony.
